How to Join the Colorguard
You
must audition to be a member.
Auditions are held in May. Look for more information at the
8th Grade Open House!
You
are able to check out the team at a basket ball game during
half time.
Also
register for the class MUS180-Colorguard. We are a co-curricular
activity that meets everyday. This will meet .5 of your fine
arts requirement.

Rehearsals and Schedule
We
rehearse every Tuesday and Thursday evening for three hours.
In the fall, rehearsals are held outside on the softball field
and the Marching Band joins us. In the winter, we rehearse
indoors. A typical rehearsal starts with stretching and body
warmups, followed by light running in a block formation. Included
in rehearsal is a flag warmup consisting of dropspins, angles,
and tosses. The night is concluded with learning and cleaning
work and drill and final run-throughs of the show work.
When the colorguard isn't practicing during Fifth hour class
we are working on judging and critiquing performances and
working on community service projects.

Steffany
King, Director
Steffany
King has been involved in color guard since 1983 and is currently
celebrating her 20th year as the Director of the Dubuque Senior
High School Colorguard. Since she started at Senior in 1991,
she has built a financially self-sufficient program which
has successfully competed both fall and winter seasons. She
works hard to make the team experience a training program
for future instructors, providing lots of opportunities to
learn and practice writing and teaching color guard and dance.
She also serves as drill writer and visual designer for the
Dubuque Senior Marching Band. She has worked with many other
programs across the state as a choreographer and advisor.
She spent 6 years with the Colt Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps
as guard choreographer and instructor, director and drill
writer and currently serves on their Booster Board. Her guards
have won numerous awards and recognition across the state
and in the mid-west, including 9 state team titles and 12
state solo titles. She also enjoys spending time as a color
guard adjudicator and clinician. Steffany has a degree in
Art and teaches Photography, Web Design, and Color Guard (which
is a full credit co-curricular class). To balance life and
make everything more fun, she is married and has two girls.

Kelly
Phillips, Staff
Kelly has been on staff on and off since she graduated in
2004. We are happy to have her here full time! While on the
team Kelly was captain and competed at state solos. Kelly
is currently working as a nurse on the cardio care floor at
Mercy Hospital. In the past Kelly has volunteered with the
Washington Middle School Dance Team, The Irving Flag Team,
the Colt Cadets Colorguard, and the Roosevelt Middle School
Colorguard.
Rachel
Dement, Staff
Rachel was a member of the DSHS colorguard for four years
and was captain for her junior and senior years. She now serves
as choreographer for the Senior Colorguard. Rachel graduated
from Capri College, earning her Cosmetology License, and now
is working in St Paul, Minnesota. Rachel has also marched
with the Colts Drum and Bugle Corps Color Guard.
